Chassis Split

In the Dallas/Fort Worth metroplex, a chassis split happens when the container and chassis are not picked up or returned to the same location. With over 15 Steamship Lines (SSLs), three major pool chassis providers, and six different container depots operating in the region, this complexity can lead to sudden changes in pickup and return instructions.

Steamship Lines (SSLs) and depots can—and often do—change these locations without notice, creating costly delays and logistical headaches for shippers.

Even if a chassis split is anticipated, it may not occur; in such cases, no charges will be assessed. Conversely, if a chassis split is not anticipated, a fee may still be imposed by the Steamship Line and passed on to the shipper.

NOTES:
If a container does not return to the rail, there will be a chassis split.
Imports potentially have a chassis split on the backside if the empty box has to be returned to a location other than the rail.
Exports potentially have a chassis split on the front side if the SSL requires us to bring a chassis to a separate location from where the empty box comes from
Chassis splits on the backend for empty return locations can change at any time based on the decision of the SSL. We will notify you as soon as the depot confirms the location.
Chassis splits for exports can occur at any time due to the first-come, first-served policy of the depots and chassis availability. We will notify you as soon as confirmed by the depot.
